Assignment 2 - Architectural Premise


My original concept of fence related to a barrier which represented the physical as well as symbolical aspect of cultural separation such as the Berlin wall and the West Bank wall.

My architectural premise developed from my initial concept deals with expanding on my original idea to include building as a means of influencing or representing certain cultural aspects through their symbolism. Certain building do more than just provide for a certain function, their form can be used to represent certain cultural aspects. The built environment in any given city or town can reflect on the ideals of the local culture or of the entire country.

Theoretical context relating to 'Fence'

My idea of fence is one that facilitates a barrier which separates societies and cultures. The barrier can be represented by a physical barrier such as the famous Berlin wall and the more recent West Bank wall or a phsycological barrier where individuals or societies choose to separate themselves from others who are different.
